My Valentine

Yesterday was a very scary day at my house. The day started out like normal - getting my 17 year old daughter out of bed and ready for school.

As always, she was running late. I had parked behind her in the driveway so I told her to take my car (an SUV) to save time. She left for school and I settled down to work, but less than five minutes later I received a phone call.

Shortly after leaving the house, she turned east and faced a glare so bright she couldn't see. A more experienced driver would have stopped, but she did not. There were two large utility trucks pulled over on the side of the road, and she hit the one that was parked in front of her.

Luckily, she was wearing her seat belt. She flew forward and hit her head on the steering wheel, but other than a bump on her forehead and a bruise to her ego, she is fine. I thank God she was driving my car because hers would have gone underneath the truck, and I have no doubt that she would have ended up in the hospital.

So my Valentine's Day present this year is not flowers or chocolate in a heart-shaped box. It's that my baby is home safe with me, and that's the best present I could ask for.

Wishing you a safe and happy Valentine's Day.

  3. So glad to know your Valentine is okay, Vicki! Scary, to be sure, but material damage in only inconvenience. Love loss - well, you don't have to think of that when your baby is back in your arms!

  7. OMC! I'm glad she wasn't badly hurt. I guess sometimes those big gas guzzlers serve their purpose. Props to her for wearing her seat belt. So many young people don't.

  8. I had the same experience when I was a week shy of 17. There was a glare, but I didn't let it stop me from driving the speed limit so I could get to school. I hit a city bus stopped to pick up passengers just a few blocks from home. I wasn't wearing a seatbelt, so I hit the windshield, but I was in my mom's big ol' tank of a car, so a few stitches later I was okay. I'm glad she's okay too and trust me, this will serve as a lesson for her for life.

  14. Mommy's had that happen to her too. She slowed down and gotted honks behind her, but that's far, far better than to risk running into something! We's so glad your girl is okay, except for the headbonk (and not the good kind either).

  15. Oh, dear. I'm so glad your SUV was blocking her car. Hope her head isn't hurting anymore.

I have a 14.5 y-o daughter. The prospect of her even having her learners' soon gives me shivers. :|
