Saving Castaways: Esther

Castaways is a documentary series chronicling the successful rehabilitation program of inmates training unwanted dogs for reintroduction or adoption, while highlighting the plight that both prisoners and dogs face.

Castaways is about characters whose lives and stories are woven together and bonded by the interaction of man and dog. Each trying to save and serve one another.

Esther was severely abused in a puppy mill before being rehabilitated by Debi Stevens and her Prison Trained K-9 Companion Program. Esther spent eight months at the no-kill National Puppy Mill Rescue where she was cared for and brought back to health. Her emotional scars of abuse made her very distrustful of humans and therefore unlikely to be adopted.

Her inclusion into the K-9 prison program was a turning point in her rehabilitation. During five weeks of continual human attention and interaction, trainer Jason Mayo slowly restored trust within Esther. Her true self soon emerged. Today she is a playful and responsive companion.

Castaways offers a look at redemption and second chances while presenting hope and opportunity. Castaways touches hearts, changes lives and reveals who most benefits from the program. For more information on the series, visit www.savingcastaways.com.

  1. Thank you for sharing this story/program! What a powerful message about redemption and compassion for people and animals. Theresa Strader is right...it's everybody together that gives a damn that makes a difference.
