August 15 is National Check the Chip Day

Via PRWeb - Microchips greatly increase the chances of returning a lost or stolen pet, but only if that microchip’s registration information is accurate.

To remind pet owners to have their pets microchipped and to keep the registration information up-to-date, AVMA and the American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA) joined together to create “Check the Chip Day.

If your pet hasn’t been microchipped, take this as a reminder to make an appointment with a vet to have it done, and then make sure that your pet’s chip is immediately registered. It’s as quick as a vaccination and is finished in a matter of seconds.

If your pet is already microchipped, check the AHAA microchip lookup tool to make sure the chip is properly registered at http://www.petmicrochiplookup.org/.

To update the registration, you will need your pet’s microchip number. If an account has not been created, you will need to do that as well so you can access the registration in the future to update the information. Make sure that all of the information, particularly the phone number and address, are correct.

There are many databases that allow the registration of pet microchips, but the one that really counts – the one that animal shelters and veterinarians will search – is the one maintained by the manufacturer of your pet’s microchip.

AAHA’s Universal Pet Microchip Lookup Tool, an internet-based application, is linked to a majority of microchip manufacturers. In addition, a number of public microchip registries have also been linked to the AAHA Universal Pet Microchip Lookup Tool to make it easier to find a microchip’s registration.

Manufacturers and databases that participate in the AAHA Universal Pet Microchip Lookup Tool:
  • AKC Companion Animal Recovery (AKC-CAR)
  • EIDAP
  • Found Animals
  • HomeAgain (includes Banfield chips)
  • InfoPet Microchip
  • I.D. Systems
  • PetKey
  • PetLink
  • Save This Life
  • SmartTag Microchip

Many registries are offering discounts today like Petkey, a participating AAHA microchip registry that’s providing all customers 50% off any registration for “Check the Chip Day”. Be sure to ask for a Check the Chip discount when calling your registry.

  1. Thanks for this reminder. I know Chester's microchip info is not up to date. I am in a bit of a pickle there though. I inherited Chester from a roommate almost 8 years ago and I think it has her info on it. I tired to update the info once but I needed her permission....and we don't talk anymore. To make it even worse, I am sure the information she first entered is not accurate for her. I don't know what to do. I know I need to keep looking into how I can fix it though.

  2. Hmmm, I know Mario is microchipped. However, he doesn't appear on the link you provided. Guess I'd better go back through his paper work and check this out. We might have to get him microchipped again. The Humane Society did it before we could adopt him, which I was thankful for. Thanks, this is important information. Oh, I changed the URL to my personal blog back to the original one:
